Why new rules for pension
Why new rules for pension
Clearer and more personal pension
The new pension rules came into effect on 1 July 2023. On this date, the Future Pensions Act (Wtp) became effective. The main reasons for the new rules are:
- To many employees, it is not clear how much they pay for their pension and how much they accrue. With the new pension scheme, everyone accrues pension in a plan based on paying premiums (defined contribution plan). This sets out how much you and your employer contribute to your pension. In the new pension scheme, you can see the gains on investing the deposit.
- The labour market is changing. Some people stop working for a while, reduce their working hours or start working on a freelance basis. This is where the current pension rules do not fit well. With the new rules, the pension continues to grow through the returns on your investments, even if you stop working for a while. This is because the pension fund continues to invest your pension money.
- If investments are doing well, sometimes the pension does not go up now. This is because pension funds have to abide by certain rules on the actuarial interest rate and funding ratio. Under the current rules, if interest rates are low for an extended period, we are required to keep a large reserve. Indexation for pensions to keep up with prices is difficult or impossible in that situation. That feels unfair. Under the new rules, the required reserve is lower. This allows quicker indexation of pensions if investments do well. On the other hand, (expected) pensions also get reduced quicker. We will continue to do our utmost to ensure that the pensions of everyone who receives a pension remain as stable as possible. Good to know: pension money never “runs out”. Even if you live to a very old age. Together, we make sure everyone always gets a pension.
